Promoters And Management

The Union Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Sharad Pawar has said that the Central Government has taken a number of measures to assist the sugar industry and help sugarcane farmers. He said that almost all the financial assistance to sugar industry is meant for payment of cane dues and therefore, the industry must ensure that farmers are paid their dues without any delay.

He said that another assistance of 300 crore would be available from the Sugar Development Fund on account of defraying of internal transport, handling and marketing charges and ocean freight on sugar exports made on or after 19th April 2007.

Biggest problem the sugar industry facing today is surplus production -- from 10 lakh tonnes in 1950 to over 200 lakh tonnes at present. While consumption of sugar is increasing at a steady pace of 4 to 5 per cent per annum, it does not match the increase in production. As a result, prices of sugar have been steadily sliding this year. In three months' time -- from January to March this year -- sugar prices crashed from Rs 1,800 to Rs 1,300 per quintal.

With the entry of China in the international sugar market in a big way coupled with stiff competition from Brazil and other countries, sugarcane growers and the sugar industry in the country will have a bleak future unless long and short term measures are taken,
